The Ngāti Rangi Claims Committee Charitable Trust ("Claims Committee") was established in May 2004. The Claims Committee is made up of one representative of each of the six Ngāti Rangi claims.  While no longer directly under the mantle of the Ngāti Rangi Trust (NgRT), links remain between the Claims Committee and the NgRT and two representatives from the NgRT are members on the Claims Committee (NgRT Chair and Deputy Chair).

The Claimants have been actively planning and working towards the hearing and settlement of the Ngāti Rangi claims for at least 16 years though initial work started in the late 1980s with the Rangipō North 8 investigations.

WHERE ARE WE AT?

The Claims Committee are working in three Tribunal Inquiry Districts:  the National Park, Whanganui and will be required to participate in the Taihape Inquiry at a later date.

Tongariro National Park Tribunal

All tangata whenua claimants have presented their korero before the Tribunal between Feb-Oct 2006.  In Nov 2006, the Crown also gave their evidence and in part responded to tangata whenua issues.

There is only one final hearing, Closing Submissions set for 30 April - 4 May 2007.  The venue is expected to be in Ohakune though this is not yet confirmed.

Whanganui Tribunal

The Whanganui Hearings are expected to start in the second half of 2007.  Dates are yet to be confirmed.
